The Church of St. George is nestled in the village of Staro Nagoričane, near Kumanovo in northeastern North Macedonia. Originally built in 1071 by Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, the church was later restored and expanded between 1312 and 1318 by Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin following his military victories. This restoration marked the church as one of Milutin’s most significant endowments, transforming it into a masterpiece of medieval Serbian and Byzantine heritage.
St. George’s Church exemplifies the Serbo-Byzantine style with a cross-in-square plan and five domes—one central and four smaller ones at each corner. The structure reveals two distinct construction phases: the lower part built of large sandstone blocks from the original 11th-century basilica, and the upper part composed of alternating stone and brick bands added in the 14th century. Inside, the naos and bema are divided by a stone iconostasis, flanked by a prothesis and diaconicon. The layered spatial design and hybrid basilica-cross layout offer a rare and complex architectural experience.
The frescoes, completed around 1317–1318 under Bishop Benjamin of Nagoričane, were painted by the renowned artists Michael Astrapas and Eutychios. These works are considered the pinnacle of the Palaiologan Renaissance, showcasing vivid narrative cycles across multiple registers. The naos features scenes from the life and martyrdom of St. George, the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, and major liturgical feasts. The apse includes depictions of church fathers, the Communion of the Apostles, and the enthroned Virgin Mary. The frescoes are notable for their expressive gestures, expanded color palette, and intricate layering, reflecting both theological depth and artistic innovation.
Staro Nagorichane is under the jurisdiction of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
