BLAGO Expedition at Ramaća

The team of Blago Fund organized an expedition to Ramaća, a village in the heart of the Šumadija district in central Serbia, at the foothills of Rudnik mountain. Besides wonderful scenery and fresh air, the village boasts itself with a beautiful medieval church that still preserves most of its original wall painting. It was our goal to create a comprehensive photo documentation of the church architecture and fresco decoration and present it to the world audience. |

The church of Saints Constantine and Helena, originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas, is an endowment of unknown noblemеn, variously dated from the last decade of the 14th century to the middle of the 15th century. The single-aisle church with a slender octagonal dome was plastered and unlike the churches of its time, did not have any sculptural decoration. The large wooden narthex is a 19th-century addition. |

Although some of them are greatly damaged, frescoes are preserved in the nave, sanctuary, and the drum of the dome. In the nave an extensive cycle of the Miracles of Saint Nicholas can be seen, along with an abridged cycle of the Life of the Virgin, the Founders composition showing a priest with his brother and son, as well as a number of individual figures, some of which may represent the members of the ruling family, as can be discerned from their opulent attire.

Through their effort and hospitality, Fr. Dragan Milovančević with his family and parishioners made sure our stay in Ramaća was pleasant and in fond memories.

The church of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the oldest churches on the canonical territory of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In historical sources, it is first mentioned as a seat of a bishopric in the 10th century. It is considered to be one of the earliest spiritual centers in the Ras area where the first Serbian state was created under Great Župan Stephen Nemanja in the 11th century. It was in this church that Nemanja was baptized, where he later organized church councils, and passed on his rulership to his son upon taking of monastic vows. |
